The members of Bruhat Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (BSNDP) signed a petition asking permission from the government to celebrate Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi on August 26, in Karantaka.
This festival is celebrated by the Idiga community in Karnataka. Guru, born in an Ezhava family, where the Ezhava were considered as lower caste. He had his education from a Nair teacher who was from an upper caste and his interest in Vedanta and the ideas of social equality led him to fight against caste discrimination and for the rights of the people.
Saidappa K Guttegara, President, BSNDP said, “Guruji was a person who stood by his values and tried to uplift the poor regardless of caste and gave free education to children. He believed that through education and spiritual enlightenment, people can fight for themselves. So it is necessary that we should celebrate his birthday to honor him for the efforts he had taken to support us.”
