BENGALURU: Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) plans to empower women by introducing a women’s coach soon to enable their safety and security.
“We are planning to increase the number of Metro coaches in each train from three to six in the near future. We will examine the proposal to reserve a coach for women,” Bengaluru development minister KJ George said recently.
There are many women commuters who use the Metro every day. The state government, Ministry of Bengaluru Development and BMRCL are planning to introduce three compartments for women commuters.
The newly-opened Byappanahalli–Mysuru Road line (east-west corridor) has led to a leap in daily ridership in the last few months. According to statistics, more than one lakh Bengalureans travel in Namma Metro every day. It has gone up from several thousands to lakhs in just a few months’ time.
“It is necessary to introduce the ladies compartment in metro. This is a preventive measure from bad circumstances also this is a safety measures,” said Sai Guru Manvitha, who commutes via Metro every day.
