BENGALURU: Another five-a-side competition? All things considered, not by any stretch of the imagination because, by and large, these football tournaments that have shifted from the norm usually see nine-on-nine or seven-on-seven. Five-on-five is rare.

What’s more? This rare treat is coming the way of football fans very soon with the Bangalore First Football League – the nation’s first five-a-side football tournament – will begin sometime between mid-August and September.

The tournament will consist of 10 teams with 12 players in each team playing in 18 turf locations, having home and away turfs. The tournament will go on till November.

“We have always been thinking about a five-on-five tournament, and now we are all set to run it. We are eagerly waiting to watch all the players play as the game-play is different when it one plays on the turf.” said, Jorden Tamang, coach.

“Through this, we needed to give an opportunity to all beginners as well, as the sport gives the vibe of home and away turfs.” he added.

“The thirst for football in the city has grown massively, and we are lucky to host something like this. We also plan to extend our reach to other states by a year from now.” said, Arjun Kumar, event manager.

‘Teams like KicksOnGrass (Bellandur), Tiento (Mission Road), The Hub Soccer Mania (Whitefield) and Gamechanger (Mathikere) are to be witnessed in the tournament,” said Jorden.”The fields are spread across the city.”

One can become an owner of a team by filling up a registration form indicating the 12 squad members and pay a registration fee (Rs 40,000 to Rs 60,000). The organisers will provide the players with the jerseys with the team’s logo on each of them. The cash prize pool is Rs 2 lakh with the top-scorer and best goalkeeper set to receive special awards.
