The Election Commission on Saturday, January 25, will kick off a year-long drive on voter literacy in order to get more people to exercise their franchise.
It is launching the initiative on the occasion of National Voters’ Day (NVD), which falls on Saturday. This is the 10th time NVD is being celebrated, and the theme this year is Electoral Literacy for Stronger Democracy.
It is as part of this theme that the poll panel will mark the beginning of “year-long activities which focus on voter education and renewal of citizens’ faith in the electoral process,” it said in a statement on Friday.
The move comes after several instances of the Opposition parties claiming that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used by the EC to conduct polls are rigged in favour of candidates of the ruing BJP.
Meanwhile, the National Awards for the Best Electoral Practices shall be conferred on district and state-level officers for their performance in the conduct of elections in different spheres.
